Laura Mackiewicz

Executive Director
Danialle Karmanos’ Work It Out

What’s an Executive Director?

It’s the person who gets things done … who makes things happen … who transforms ideas and plans into realities and results. And there just isn’t a better “get it done” person anywhere than Laura Mackiewicz.

Prior to holding DKWIO’s Executive Director position Laura was the Director of Operations.  Before joining DKWIO, Laura was a lead event producer.  She produced dozens and dozens of highly complex PR and Marketing events in Detroit and all around the world.

Why is that important to DKWIO?

Because DKWIO promises to provide outstanding programming for kids and dynamic outreach events for the community.

Laura Mackiewicz is in charge of keeping those promises. Drawing on her extensive knowledge of logistics, project management and communications, Laura makes things happen – on time, on target and on budget.

On any given day, it’s not unusual to find Laura orienting volunteers or efficiently running a meeting for a non-profit or corresponding with donors, or editing a video or planning a fundraiser or doing a site survey or writing a newsletter or earning the trust of a child.

Laura can give 100% to 100 different things – and does.  Every single day.

But here’s the best part …

Laura not only understands what needs to happen and when … she also understands why.  And that’s why if you ask her what she does, she probably won’t even mention “operations.”  She’ll tell you she’s in the business of changing children’s lives for the better.

What’s she like as a person?

People who have been fortunate enough to work with Laura Mackiewicz are just that – fortunate.  Because Laura is one of those rare individuals who can juggle multiple projects, conflicting deadlines, demanding suppliers, razor-thin budgets, impatient clients and last-minute changes – all without losing her cool, her focus or her smile.  There’s an aura of positive energy surrounding Laura that follows her wherever she goes and affects everyone with whom she comes in contact.

But it you had to describe Laura in a single word, it would be “integrity.”  The standards that she sets for herself and for others are uncompromising.  Because no one understands better than Laura that when you’re working with kids, there’s no room for “good enough” … or “almost.” The only acceptable class is world-class.

Anything else?

Yes.  She’s an outstanding public speaker and a professional grade singer.  And if you’re one of those people who have trouble with “iewicz” names, don’t worry.  She’ll answer to Laura “Mack.”
