Welcome to DKWIO! By taking this first step, you are already battling the epidemic of childhood obesity and saving the lives of children. Bravo!
I’m a news junkie. Seven years ago, I began reading more and more about the epidemic of childhood obesity. I saw documentation of the problem, but I didn’t see anyone doing anything about it. I found it fascinating and infuriating.
Who was going to stand up and save our children? This is the first generation that will not outlive its parents. That’s not okay. I wondered who would speak up. Next thing I knew, I heard my own voice. I jumped in with both feet and a fierce determination to make a difference.
So, how did we evolve from an epiphany into a movement?
My first step was to surround myself with a small group of incredibly smart and talented people. Together, we launched Danialle Karmanos’ Work It Out. I put my name on the organization because I wanted to communicate – loud and clear – that DKWIO was going to reflect my standards and my expectations.
For, I believe, when you’re working with kids there is NO room for error. I also believe that the Karmanos name means something in our community. It has come to stand for quality, commitment and for doing the right things for the right reasons in the right way. And that’s DKWIO all the way! With that, we built the organization slowly and strategically on a solid foundation.
Did we intend to be yoga based? Honestly, no. But four years ago the children spoke to us. And we listened. At first it seemed crazy; do inner-city kids want to do yoga? In a word … YES!
They were craving a safe environment to be still and feel good – mind, body and spirit. They are, and always have been, our authentic inspiration. They told us what they needed, and we gave them a curriculum that they can do anywhere at any time. They didn’t just participate; they became ambassadors – reaching family, friends and other students. This is a movement.
Danialle Karmanos’ Work It Out is unique because it’s authentic. Our intentions, at the most basic level, are pure. We equip kids with the tools to make healthy choices – mind, body and spirit. We don’t wait for the kids to come to us – we take our yoga-based curriculum to them. We work directly with those who need us most – the at-risk children struggling to thrive and grow in some of the most depressed neighborhoods in our community.
We provide kids with a set of easy-to-learn tools that are proven to increase physical and mental health in a meaningful, sustainable way. DKWIO is a roll-up-the-sleeves, put-your-money-where-your-mouth-is curriculum that delivers valuable information on health, exercise and nutrition to kids and their families through fun, engaging and, most importantly, educational activities.
I am so proud that the DMC/Children’s Hospital reached out to partner with DKWIO and help us get to more kids in more neighborhoods throughout the community.
I invite you to explore our website and learn more about what we do … how we do it … and how you can help. Whether you work as an educator, civic leader or youth advocate, or just have concerns about the well-being of our children, by becoming part of the DKWIO movement you can help drive impactful change in the health and well-being of the most precious members of our society – our children.
Launching Danialle Karmanos’ Work It Out has been an incredibly rewarding and fun experience for me and for everyone associated with our program. The kids express such wonderful appreciation for our efforts and have responded to us with love, kindness and compassion. Please enjoy our website, and contact firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions, ideas or opportunities.
